USS Constellation: Learn About US Naval History Near Union Wharf
One of the crown jewels of Baltimore’s historic ship collection, the USS Constellation was commissioned in 1853 to safeguard American lives and commerce in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and at the mouth of the Congo River. After the outbreak of the Civil War, the Constellation served the United States by enforcing naval blockades and pursuing blockade runners. In the late 1800s, Naval Academy midshipmen took their training cruises aboard the Constellation and made ceremonial trips around the world. Despite this proud history, however, the ship eventually fell into disrepair during the 20th century before being restored in the late 1990s.
Today, the USS Constellation is open for visits in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, where it is one of the most popular sites.
