Two Ways Union Wharf Residents Can Give Back to the Community This Holiday Season

Seeking a new way to celebrate the upcoming holiday season? Consider charity work! There are many organizations located near Union Wharf that are in need of volunteers and donations, particularly around the holidays, and you don't have to do too much to make a difference. In fact, no matter the amount of your donation or contribution, you'll likely walk away with a new understanding of the old phrase "It's better to give than to receive." Here are just two places where you can make an impact this holiday season:

1) Maryland Food Bank
A nonprofit hunger-relief organization, the 35-year-old Maryland Food Bank distributes more than 100,000 meals per day to help feed persons in need throughout the state of Maryland. The organization relies on food donations from farms and retailers, as well as on donations from the general public. Donations from the general public to the Maryland Food Bank can be made in three different forms: time, money, or food. The latter two options can be performed via the organization's website, while donations of time — that is, volunteer work — takes place within Maryland Food Bank's three Maryland offices.

2) Baltimore Outreach Services
Established in 2002, this non-profit organization operates on the mission to "provide housing, jobs and education to impoverished women and children in Baltimore City." To do so, Baltimore Outreach Services (BOS) supplies homeless women and children (more than 250 every year) with emergency shelter, food, clothing, and job training. The general public can help support BOS through financial contributions, volunteer work, or by donating clothing, linens, diapers, and other items to the BOS shelter at 701 South Charles Street.
