Donut Glaze Over National Donut Day!

doughnuts

Hole-y Moley, it’s almost National Donut Day!

Did someone say … donuts? Yes, yes we did.

National Donut Day is on Friday, June 5th. It is on the first Friday of June every year. This holiday is in commemoration for the “Lassies” who served donuts to soldiers in World War I. In 1938, National Donut Day became an official holiday, when the Chicago Salvation Army desired to help those in need due to the detrimental effects of the Great Depression. Today, National Donut Day helps local businesses and entrepreneurs, with sugary sweets.

If interested, read more here about the holiday.

We Donut Know What We’d Do Without Donuts

So, how did the donut come-to-be?

While the history of donuts may be a little, well, nuts, they came to Manhattan as “olykoeks,” or oily cakes. In the 1800s, Elizabeth Gregory made a fried dough, with spices and lemon, for her son and his long sea voyages. To store the dough, she put walnuts, or hazelnuts, in the middle of the dough. Thus, creating a donut with a hole, the first donut hole.

Donuts, however, were not popularized, until World War I. Female volunteers donated millions of donuts to American soldiers in French trenches.

Years later, the first donut machine was invented in 1920 in New York City. By the 1930s, donuts became a coveted baked good along the East Coast, and throughout the U.S.
