Celebrate the Solstice in Baltimore with Some Summer Fun!

On Wednesday, June 21 at 10:58 a.m, the North Pole will reach its maximum tilt, an event known as the Summer Solstice, which marks the astronomical start of summer. What this means is lots of sunlight and summer fun! There is no better place to spend the long, warm days for Union Wharf residents than Baltimore City, home to countless activities, ranging from thrilling to relaxing to delicious.

Snowballs in the Summer?

Snowballs aren’t just for winter! During the summer in Baltimore, snowballs turn from something to throw at your friends to a tasty treat that you can share with your friends. Directly across from the Food Market on the Avenue in Hampden is Quality Snowballs, which brings the Baltimore treat to a converted shipping container painted by local artist Paige Orpin. Quality Snowballs serves the classics, plus their own unique creations. Be sure to try their torched marshmallow topping!

In Federal Hill, you’ll find Crushed Velvet, another delicious snowball shop that offers up the fluffiest version of the dessert you could ask for and features all natural, homemade syrups. Be sure to try the fan-favorite, Sour Cherry Lime-ade.

In the mood for something a little creamier? Bmore Licks, with locations in Canton and Federal Hill, is a 2nd Generation ice cream shop that offers a bevy of soft serve, hard serve, and milkshake options, with vegan and non-dairy options available. For the perfect summertime treat, opt for their infamous Dole Whip—with flavors on a weekly rotation, there’s always something new to try!

The Charmery in Hampden is also a “charming” ice cream option, run by a husband and wife team who value mastery, hospitality, happiness, community, consideration, and spirit. You’ll definitely want to check out their uniquely Baltimore favorites, like Old Bay Caramel.

The Taste of Baltimore…in a Shell

Baltimore is known for its mouth-watering steamed crabs, and Locust Point Steamers provides just that. Locust Point Steamers serves fresh, delectable crabs to newbies and vets alike, providing a place to get great seafood with great friends. Get there early to grab a space on their coveted rooftop deck!

Captain James Seafood Palace’s Crab Deck is another crab venue, uniquely situated on the water across from their restaurant, which looks like a large ship. They’ve been an iconic Baltimore venue for 30+ years and continue to dole out quality food and quality times.

Have a Sporty Summer

Baltimore provides numerous locations to get up and active by playing some volleyball, and Rash Field in Federal Hill is a great place to do just that. Offering both league play and drop in games, Rash Field has waterfront views and something sporty for you no matter your level of competitiveness.

The Park in Canton also offers Beach Volleyball, as well as the rapidly growing sport Pickleball, a game friendly for all ages. The on-site bar also offers a great way to kick back and relax after exercising.

More of a fan of watching sports? Nothing says summer more than seeing an Orioles game at the iconic Camden Yards! Watch the birds take on competition from the top flight of professional baseball, the MLB, and enjoy some food, drink, and sun while doing so!

Drink in the Sun

There’s nothing better than a refreshing, summer cocktail, and Ouzo Beach is the perfect outdoor venue to enjoy just that. With a live DJ and  Mediterranean vibes, Ouzo Beach in Harbor East provides an exquisite atmosphere to have some drinks with friends.

Little Havana in Federal Hill also has an enthralling atmosphere and a fascinating story: it was once an abandoned warehouse that was transformed into a thriving, Cuban-themed venue with great food and classic cocktails. Enjoy mojitos with friends on their outdoor patio overlooking the harbor for some summertime fun in the sun.

Bayside Cantina, a Mexican restaurant in Canton, offers the perfect view for sipping cocktails, like their refreshing Paloma, while watching a gorgeous sunset—the perfect combination for friends and couples alike.

Take a Dip

The Summer sun can be blistering, but taking a dip in a refreshing pool is a way to beat the heat! Baltimore offers many options for those looking to take a swim.

The Swim Club in Canton is an urban oasis open seven days a week. Its proximity to Raw and Refined means you’ll always have a refreshing beverage in your hand, too.

The Four Seasons in Harbor East offers a breathtaking view of Baltimore from its infinity pool, complemented by the Splash Pool Bar & Grill.

Pendry in Fells Point gives guests access to a stunning panoramic harbor view, with six private cabanas available.

Don’t feel like going too far? Your home at Union Wharf offers a zero-edge infinity pool with water cascading over granite stones. It’s the perfect place to sit with friends and neighbors after a day’s work.

Celebrate With Science

Looking to ring in the summer in a novel and charitable way? Stop by at the 46th annual Solstice fundraiser Gala at the Maryland Science Center. Offering music, food, drink, and science, the gala supports the Science Center’s efforts to offer free admission to visiting Maryland schools. It’s fun, educational, and gives back to the Baltimore community.
